Book Description
James Bruce: Life Lived. This Story is a deeply personal and authentic autobiography, chronicling the true journey of my life in my own words. Rooted in the essence of the term itself—a self-created narrative- this book offers a window into my unique experiences, the remarkable people I've encountered, and the diverse places that have shaped my path.
Through diligent research, family stories, and digital archives, I have traced the threads of my ancestry, recounting vivid memories from childhood to the present day. Each chapter invites readers into the heart of my world. With heartfelt recollections and candid reflections, the story unfolds from the introduction of my parents to the moment of my birth and beyond, weaving in episodes of joy, challenge, and discovery.
What makes this book more than just a memoir is its rhythm—real-life stories are interlaced chronologically, making the journey not only insightful but also enjoyable and relatable. Along the way, I've included historical and cultural touchpoints that bring context and color to the narrative, connecting my personal timeline with the broader world.

James Bruce, age 79, is an accomplished author, producer, agent, and consultant whose remarkable career spans decades in the entertainment industry. A proud great-grandfather, Bruce has lived a life as colorful and dynamic as the stories he tells.
He has penned an acclaimed autobiography and numerous nonfiction works on the music business, drawing from his firsthand experiences working alongside artists, navigating contracts, and witnessing the triumphs and pitfalls of an ever-evolving industry. With an insider’s eye and a storyteller’s heart, Bruce has guided readers through the highs and lows of a world few truly experience.
Now, in his latest work, Drugs Made in Heaven and Murder on Broadway, Bruce turns his talent to fiction. Editorial Reviews
How Hollywood Got Sex and Life All Wrong Reviews
Dear James Bruce,
I’ve just finished reading How Hollywood Got Sex and Life All Wrong, from the opening pages to the final lines, and I wanted to reach out personally. What struck me most was the way you handled the honest interplay of personal memory and cultural reflection, weaving an autobiography that critiques the illusions of an industry while affirming the tangible truths of a lived life; it’s rare to see that kind of unvarnished clarity and reflective insight carried so consistently from beginning to end.
Your storytelling has a quiet authority to it. The narrative rhythm, the restraint in delivering both personal anecdote and broader commentary, and the way the story trusts the reader to navigate between intimate recollection and cultural observation all signal an author who knows exactly what kind of book they are writing and who they are writing it for. I found myself thinking often about how naturally this memoir speaks to readers who seek authenticity over artifice, and who value a life examined with both honesty and a hint of amused, clear-eyed critique.
By way of introduction, I’m Elena Ferrante, author of My Brilliant Friend. Over the years, I’ve become deeply interested not just in the craft of life-writing, but in how the right stories, true stories, find the readers they were always meant to reach, without compromising their integrity or distinctive voice.
Because I genuinely admire How Hollywood Got Sex and Life All Wrong, I wondered if you’ve given any thought to strengthening its visibility among the readers who would most deeply connect with it. From time to time, I make quiet introductions to a trusted contact of mine, someone who works closely with thoughtful nonfiction and understands how to support a book’s presence while remaining faithful to the author’s authentic intent. It’s never about noise, only thoughtful positioning and meaningful promotion.
I wouldn’t mention this if I didn’t believe your work deserved that kind of careful attention. Your book feels like one that could travel much further, with the right guidance and connections supporting its journey to readers who cherish true stories told with conviction and character.
Elena Ferrante is the author of The Days of Abandonment (Europa, 2005), Troubling Love (Europa, 2006), and The Lost Daughter (Europa, 2008), now a film directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. She is also the author of Incidental Inventions (Europa, 2019), illustrated by Andrea Ucini; Frantumaglia: A Writer’s Journey (Europa, 2016); and a children’s picture book illustrated by Mara Cerri, The Beach at Night (Europa, 2016). The four volumes known as the “Neapolitan novels” (My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child) were published by Europa Editions in English between 2012 and 2015. My Brilliant Friend, the HBO series.

Book Summary
This autobiography of James Bruce is a true story of my life, written or told by me. The origins of the word mean a self-produced life story. My life experiences, the people I have met, and the places I have visited are included in this book. I have included my ancestry based on my research, thanks in part to my parents' memories of those facts and information that I was able to collect from the internet and family. Being an autobiography, after an introduction of my folks, it all starts with my birth and continues to present-day recollections, all factual. Parts of this book included real stories that were inserted chronologically, which I felt made this a fun and interesting read. I also included a lot of historical and cultural events.
